'BRIXMIS and Athenstedt: A Cold War Flashpoint'

This talk examined the series of incidents and detentions of BRIXMIS and of US Military Liaison Mission patrols outside the East German Air Force's Early Warning Radar Site at Athenstedt, near Halberstadt, in the period 1978-84.  In one of the well-executed ambushes the Stasi-authorised deliberate ramming of a BRIXMIS vehicle could have caused death or serious injury to the Chief of Mission and to the speaker.  The opening of previously classified Stasi and Allied archives now allows these incidents to be re-examined.
