‘Athenstedt: A Cold War Cold Case’
A lunchtime talk at the NAM as part of its ‘Foe to Friend’ exhibition season, reflecting on the British military’s period in Germany 1945-2020. It was also broadcast on Zoom.
This talk looked at the five serious incidents that occurred in the period 1978-84 outside the East German Air Force Early Warning Radar Station at Athenstedt, near Halberstadt. In 1979 and again in 1982 Allied Military Liaison Mission vehicles were deliberately rammed by East German military vehicles as the result of Stasi-directed ambushes.
